Hudson Hawk (1991)
Words cannot express the size of the dump that everyone took on Hudson Hawk. Critics hated it so much, Bruce Willis hasn't written a screenplay since. While it may not have the bravado of Die Hard (1988), this action/comedy is wonderfully enjoyable and childlike in nature.
Eddie 'Hudson Hawk' Hawkins is the world's best cat burglar. He's just been released from prison. And he has to steal some of Leonardo DaVinci's most popular inventions in order to provide alchemy capabilities to a wealthy, sadomasochistic couple. There's humor, horror, musical numbers, and a gang whose individual names are candy bars.
Hudson Hawk is for those who can appreciate the Naked Gun Trilogy (1988 - 94) and/or the Scary Movie franchise (2000 - present). Unlike some of it's contemporaries, Hudson Hawk doesn't take itself too seriously, nor does it turn into an out-and-out spoof slapstick comedy. It walks a relatively fine line, while still trying to appeal to as broad an audience as an R rating will allow.
What Makes This Movie Cool: Bruce Willis. Long before he managed to alienate and piss off everyone he worked with, Bruce Willis was a human being trying to make his way in the acting world. And this is a perfect example of a young, hungry actor who didn't want to take himself too seriously, while still keeping the laughs constant.
