In Bruges (2008)

Not gonna lie, before this movie, I had a tendency of skipping most things with Colin Farrell in it.  But this one proved me wrong.

Hiding out in Bruges after a botched murder attempt, Ray (Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleesan) await a call from their boss, Harry (Ralph Fiennes) in a hotel.  As Ray's restlessness and bigotry consume Ken, he is also tasked with murdering Ray, a decision he does not come by lightly.

To make things worse, because of what happened, Ray has become suicidal, while Harry has boarded the first flight to Bruges.  And he's really fucking angry.

This movie turns Bruges into a central character within the action and comedy.  It's beautifully historic scenery sets a wonderful backdrop for, what should be, a dreary crime drama.  The soundtrack is a chilling collection of somber piano, string and horn arrangements, which, at first is offputting, but after settling in, it turns out to compliment Ray's morbid sense of humor.

What Makes This Movie Cool:  Colin Farrell.  He is sexist, racist, xenophobic.  He makes a fat man run until he's out of breathe for fun.  He karate-chops a little person while geeked out on blow.  He punches a woman with a bottle.  But that was self defense.  This was a case where someone literally insulted every group so hilariously, they had to give him the Golden Globe.

We're not trying to be cool.  It just ended up that way.
